Spider Bite First Aid (Spiders native to North America): Most spiders native to North America bite if circumstances are right. The jumping spiders are so aggressive that they may bite without provocation. Others, including wolf spiders and some orbweavers, only bite humans defensively. In North America, the bites of most native spiders leave no signs, or produce only minor swellings or sores that resolve in hours or days without complications. For a bite causing systemic symptoms, like diminished mental capacity or confusion, difficulty breathing, profuse sweating, cramps, high blood pressure, or the like, emergency medical assistance should be sought immediately. Because all spider bites inject foreign substances into the skin, secondary infections from bacterial or viral contaminants--in the venom itself, or on the skin of the person bitten-- are theoretically possible, though evidence of such secondary infections is scarce. All spider bites should, however, be examined for secondary infection and, if found, competent medical assistance should be sought as soon as possible to limit the spread of the infection. Some North American spiders, including, but probably not limited to, the BLACK WIDOW and BROWN RECLUSE, produce bites that typically (black widow), or sometimes (brown recluse), cannot be resolved except with the assistance of competent medical professionals.
